The purpose of this activity is to improve listening and speaking skills of language learners (it can also include reading). It is a fun activity to perform for group classes.
Time needed: 20 minutes
Materials: Tables, chairs, pens/pencils, papers, instruction cards
Steps:
1. Write down multiple instruction card pairs. The card pairs will have instructions on what a person needs to tell their partner to do in the obstacle course.
2. Create multiple obstacle course in the class. The obstacle course will have a chair then a table with papers and pens/ pencils on it.
3. Divide students in to pairs.
4. Both the partners in the pair will be given different instruction cards, and they will take turns going through the obstacle course.
5. The person going through the obstacle course first will be blindfolded. Their partner will read the instruction card to know what the blindfolded person must do and then guide the person through the obstacle course.
6. When one person has completed all the activities in the obstacle course they will come back to their partner, then take off the blindfold and blindfold the partner.
7. Now the second person in the pair will complete the obstacle course based on the instructions given by the partner.
To make the activity more fun and challenging, the teacher can turn it in to a competition by telling the class that the pair to complete the activity in shortest amount of time will win.
Suggestions: Obstacle course activities given in instruction cards can include actions like: sit on the chair or lift the chair; go under the table, or around the table; find the pen/pencil; make a shape with the papers or draw a shape on the paper; bring the paper back to the partner etc.
Modifications: The activity can be modified based on the level of the learners by making the actions needed to be completed in the obstacle course more complex or less complex. Other way to modify the activity is by adding activities related to a lesson students studied e.g. instead of drawing shapes they can be told to draw a fruit if they recently studied a lesson about fruits.
